Many seasonal activities are planned for the children each year. Some of these events include an Art Camp, an Easter egg hunt, and a Halloween program called Trunk or Treat. Each Sunday, children are invited to the front of the sanctuary for a special message and then invited to go to Children’s Church where activities center on the day’s scripture lesson.
Before school begins each fall, students, teachers, and any school support personnel or volunteers are invited to the altar where the minister blesses each of them for the coming year.
Each Sunday, a child carries the Light of Christ into the sanctuary at the beginning of the 11:00 am service and carries it out into the world at the conclusion of the service. Every child who serves as an acolyte is honored each year during a church service.
On Sunday evenings, the Mt. Olivet youth meet with youth from Trinity UMC for food, fun, fellowship and Bible study. Group trips to Christian music concerts, Lake Junaluska, and Camp Tekoa are enjoyed by the youth.
When the youth graduate from high school or college, they are honored with a breakfast sponsored by the United Methodist Women. During the worship service that day, each graduate is wrapped in an embroidered blanket and prayed over by the minister.
Mt. Olivet has a long history of supporting scouting programs for the youth in our community. Boy Scout Troop #34 has been chartered more than fifty years ago. The first church fellowship building has been converted to a facility for use by the following Scout Troops that meet at the church.
Safe Sanctuaries is a program of the United Methodist Church to ensure the safety of each church’s children and youth during church hours, other church-related activities, and church-sponsored trips off the church campus. Any church member who has responsibilities in any capacity with children or youth have undergone a background check. A roving monitor is on duty during the 11:00 am service to supervise the nursery area and other areas in the facility.
